Kerala in 5 Days: Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey Backwaters
Plan five days in Kerala with a workable Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey route, honest driving times, houseboat checks, seasonal considerations and approximate costs for different travel styles.

Can you cover Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey in five days?
Yes, but this is a moving itinerary rather than a slow holiday. You get two nights in Munnar, one in Thekkady and one around Alappuzha, commonly called Alleppey. Several days involve substantial driving.
The route works best with an early arrival at Kochi and a late departure on day five. If flights give you only three full days, drop Thekkady or choose Munnar and the backwaters instead of rushing through all three.
For travellers with young children, limited mobility or a strong preference for leisurely mornings, two bases are usually more comfortable than three.
Best time for this Kerala route
October to March is generally the easiest planning window for sightseeing, although humidity remains noticeable in the backwaters. December and holiday periods can bring higher room and houseboat prices.
April and May are hotter in the lowlands, while Munnar is relatively cooler because of its elevation. The monsoon months bring green landscapes but also heavy rain, slippery paths and possible road disruption.
Hill-road restrictions are not just theoretical. Reporting from Idukki documents rain-related travel restrictions on the Gap Road corridor. That report is historical evidence of the risk, not a statement that the same restriction applies on your 2026 dates. Check current district instructions. (thehindu.com)
Day 1: Kochi to Munnar
Allow approximately four to five hours from Kochi Airport to your Munnar accommodation, sometimes longer with traffic, rain and stops. The exact hotel location matters: a property marketed as Munnar may be well outside the town.
Choose one or two convenient stops rather than a full sightseeing programme. Waterfall viewpoints can be enjoyable when safely accessible, but do not approach swollen streams or climb barriers for photographs.
Check in, eat and rest. Mountain roads can feel longer after an early flight, particularly for travellers prone to motion sickness.
Booking check
Ask the hotel about the final approach road, parking, lift access and distance from your planned sightseeing. A remote view can come with extra daily driving.
Day 2: a focused Munnar sightseeing day
Choose one main sightseeing direction. A tea museum visit and selected tea-country viewpoints can make a comfortable day. Alternatively, prioritise Eravikulam National Park if it is open and tickets are available.
Eravikulam is known for the Nilgiri tahr and its high-elevation habitat. Do not interpret a visit as permission to walk anywhere in the park or enter private tea estates. (keralatourism.org)
The park has a recurring calving-season closure, commonly around February and March, but exact annual dates require confirmation. Avoid building the whole Munnar day around unverified access. Kerala Tourism publishes forest contact details for enquiries. (keralatourism.org)
Mattupetty and nearby viewpoints are alternatives, not compulsory additions after a full park visit. Finish with time to enjoy your accommodation rather than returning after dark from a long checklist.
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady
Allow approximately three to five hours for the transfer, depending on the route, road conditions and stops. Stay around Kumily or Thekkady, and confirm how far your hotel is from the meeting point for any booked programme.
A guided spice garden visit can work after arrival. Ask what the tour covers and whether there is pressure to buy products. Shopping is optional, even when a visit is included in a package.
For Periyar activities, use official booking channels and read the reporting instructions. The reserve's official website provides boating and other programme bookings. (periyartigerreserve.org)
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. A boat ride is an opportunity to observe the landscape and animals if present, not a promise of tigers or elephants.
Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey
Allow approximately four to five hours or longer for the road journey. If you have booked a houseboat with an early-afternoon boarding time, leave promptly and avoid an ambitious morning programme in Thekkady.
This is the main scheduling conflict in many five-day itineraries: an early Periyar activity may fit, but only if reporting times, transfer arrangements and boat boarding align. Do not book both independently and hope the driver can recover lost time.
An alternative is a backwater hotel stay with a shorter afternoon cruise. That gives more flexibility if you prefer to spend the morning in Thekkady.
Houseboat or hotel: which is better?
An overnight houseboat suits travellers who want an unhurried onboard meal, an evening moored on the backwaters and a different sleeping experience. Kerala Tourism explains how modern leisure houseboats developed from traditional kettuvallams. (keralatourism.org)
A hotel plus a daytime cruise can be better for travellers who want more room, easier land access or greater flexibility. Neither option is automatically superior.
Before paying for a houseboat, confirm:
- The actual vessel, bedroom count and whether it is private or shared.
- Boarding, disembarkation and expected cruising hours.
- Air-conditioning operating hours, not just whether AC exists.
- Current operating documents and suitable life jackets, including children's sizes.
- Meal inclusions, drinking water and dietary arrangements.
- Cancellation terms if weather prevents operation.
Use Kerala Tourism's provider directory as a starting point, then verify current credentials directly. An old certificate screenshot is not proof of present validity. (keralatourism.org)
Day 5: backwaters to Kochi
After breakfast and disembarkation, travel towards Kochi. Allow approximately two to three hours or longer to the airport, depending on the starting jetty and traffic.
Fort Kochi can fit before a late flight, but only with a comfortable margin. Otherwise, keep the final day for the transfer rather than adding a hurried city tour.
Approximate Kerala trip cost for 2026
For two adults sharing rooms and a private vehicle, allow approximately Rs 25,000 to Rs 42,000 per person for four nights, ordinary meals, transfers and a standard houseboat night or equivalent backwater stay.
Mumbai return flights, premium vessels, festive supplements and substantial activity costs are additional. A one-bedroom private houseboat may cost roughly Rs 12,000 to Rs 22,000 per boat per night, with wide variation by season and specification. These are planning estimates, not confirmed quotations.
Check the Munnar and Alleppey trip and consider family trips if pace and accessibility matter more than covering three destinations.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indian tourists need a special Kerala permit?
Not for this ordinary route. Forest activities require their own tickets and compliance with entry rules.
Can I add Varkala?
Not comfortably without removing a stop or extending the trip.
Are houseboats always cruising?
No. Overnight bookings include moored time. Ask for the operating schedule before booking.
